ACT Coach

ACT Coach is designed for service members, veterans and others to use along with face-to-face treatment with a mental health professional in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). ACT Coach incorporates mindfulness and acceptance strategies to help people cope with unpleasant emotions and symptoms of mental health conditions including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, chronic pain and other trauma-related difficulties. ACT Coach helps you live with unpleasant thoughts and feelings without avoiding them or being controlled by them. Clients are encouraged to commit to actions based on what they value, with a focus on the present even in the face of these unpleasant experiences.
ACT Coach is not a self-help tool and should only be used while in therapy with a provider. It is designed to improve rates of patient participation in treatment and also to help providers adhere to the treatment protocol. Healthcare providers should have formal clinical training in ACT; this app does not provide training in ACT and will not serve as an adequate substitute for this training.
ACT Coach is available for Apple mobile devices (iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch) and will be available for Android phones and tablets in 2014.

Features of the app include:

  • Mindfulness exercises to practice the ACT core concepts, including voice-guided sessions with captions and instructions for self-guided sessions
  • Tools to help you identify personal values and take concrete actions to live your life by them
  • Educational materials about the principles and practices of ACT
  • Logs for keeping track of useful coping strategies and willingness to practice

ACT Coach is a collaborative effort between:

  • VA National Center for PTSD
  • DCoE National Center for Telehealth & Technology (T2)
